The internet has been awash with the hashtag ‘’Women supporting women’’. However, many individuals have supported the trend, including celebrities. Despite the varying meanings to the hashtag, media mogul, Mo Abudu, has given a concrete detail to what the movement in all about. Yvonne Jegede also lent her voice to the challenge.
According to Abudu, the hashtag is in line with women from Turkey whom have been killed. The death number stands at about 500. Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede also lent her voice to the trend while she spoke to Saturday Beats (The Punch).
Jegede recounted her stay in Cyprus, Turkey. She stated that she has a good knowledge of how the women are being treated in Turkey. Furthermore, she gave an example of how her neighbour was constantly beaten by her husband. Even after he would take her to the hospital, he beats her again after she has recovered. Jegede noted that nothing will be done to the husband.
In addition, the actress admitted that the women in Turkey do not have a standing right. The police does not have a say in domestic violence. Rather, they would tell the women whom have been beaten by their husbands to go home because it is a family issue.
Jegede also gave instances where some guys comfortably beat their girlfriends on the streets while she was still living there. These women are always helpless as they have no one to turn to. Also, Yvonne Jegede noted that she understands the need to support the hashtag. She also stated that the hashtag is an affirmation that women support other women.
In conclusion, the mother of one said she has always loved to talk about issues that bothers on the society. It does not necessarily have to be where she lives. She equally talked about the recent killings in Southern Kaduna. According to her, she will speak against the wrong happenings in that region, either she is directly affected or not.
