Nigeria’s music sensation Burna Boy has won the Best International Act category in the BET Awards. The 2020 BET Awards was held virtually at L.A. Live, Los Angeles, U.S. in the early hours of Monday. It was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was simulcasted via CBS.
This win is the singer’s second consecutive BET: Best International Act win. The ceremony paid tributes to Kobe Bryant and Little Richard. Moreso, it also featured performances by Alicia Keys, Chloe x Halle and Megan Thee Stallion among others.
Furthermore, Beyoncé was also honoured with the Humanitarian Award for her decades-long commitment to philanthropy. American comedian, Amanda Seales, hosted the awards.
The Nigerian star was nominated alongside Innoss’B (DR Congo), Sho Madjozi (South Africa), Stormzy (United Kingdom), and Dave (United Kingdom). Also, Ninho (France), S.Pri Noir (France), and Rema(Nigeria) were in the same category that was eventually clinched by Burna Boy.
In his acceptance speech, Burna Boy spoke on African development. In his words:
”Second time and I appreciate it. I will like to use this opportunity to say that around 1835, there was admission to turn the nation of Africa into a dominated nation. Now is the time to return back to the royalty that we were. Because in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter.”
